Harmful Algal Bloom Update

Harmful Algal Blooms

MAYVILLE, N.Y.: – The Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services continues its  monitoring and sampling efforts to evaluate the occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in Chautauqua County lakes. Current findings show:

  • Chautauqua Lake – HABs have been documented in areas of the south basin, including Celoron, and near the I-86 Bridge.  Lakewood Village Beach was closed for swimming due to the presence of blue-green algae but was re-opened on July 19, 2018 following the dissipation of blue-green algae and satisfactory results from toxin sampling at the beach.

  • Bear Lake – Reports of nearshore blue–green algae have been received from the public but have not been confirmed by officials.

  • Findley Lake – No HABs reported at this time.

Note that HAB conditions can change rapidly. Use caution when entering the water where an active bloom is present. Do not ingest the water. Closely watch children and pets. If exposed to algae, wash off immediately.
